Contact us!European Union-wide protection can be obtained by registering a trademark as a Community Trade Mark (CTM). A Community Trade Mark is by nature unitary, i.e. protection is granted and invalidated simultaneously in all member states. The Community Trade Mark is a cost-effective solution for companies marketing their products in EU member states.
Located in Spain, the Office of Harmonization for the Internal Market (OHIM) is the register authority. Applications are made in two languages, one of which must be one of the official working languages of the OHIM: English, Spanish, Italian, French or German. The applicant may use another official Community language, such as Finnish or Swedish, as the other language.
It is possible to apply for a Community Trade Mark either directly or designating the European Union in an international application. Correspondingly, the Community Trade Mark may also be used as a basis for an international registration. This, however, carries a certain degree of risk: if any insurmountable obstacles to registration are encountered when filing a CTM application, the possibility for international registration will also be eliminated.
Carefully planned protection supports a company's business strategy. When you “look before you leap”, you’ll avoid unnecessary costs and IP risks.
