Contact us!National registration grants exclusive rights to use of a trademark within the jurisdiction of the applicable register authority. In Finland the National Board of Patents and Registration registers all trademarks within Finland. Nearly all countries have an equivalent authority.
In Finland registration in accordance with the Trademarks Act grants exclusive rights to use the trademark in business as a symbol of the products or services included in the registration. It also makes it possible to prohibit others from using the trademark or any symbol that are confusingly similar with said trademark for similar products within Finland.
It is also possible to apply for national registration in other countries in accordance with their respective trademark laws. Nearly all countries require the use of a local trademark attorney, which increases the costs of national registration. In situations where a certain country is of special importance to the applicant, it may be justified to apply for registration of the trademark directly with the destination country through national registration. In countries which have not signed the Madrid Protocol, national registration is the only alternative.
National application or registration can also serve as a basis for applying for international registration at a later time.
Carefully planned protection supports a company's business strategy. When you “look before you leap”, you’ll avoid unnecessary costs and IP risks.
