Timo Helosuo, MSc (Econ.), MBA, has a notable international career of over 20 years with technology companies and multinational companies. He held an executive position at Nokia in the US and Finland, where his duties included the introduction of new products on the global consumer goods market and the active development of the mobile game ecosystem. Timo has worked as director of services and management consultant at the multinational consulting, technology and outsourcing services provider Accenture. Timo is actively involved in issues related to business between Europe and China. He is the representative for Finland at the EU–China Business Association EUCBA, board member at the Finland–China Trade Association, and an active advisor for both European and Chinese companies and authorities in IP issues. Before joining Kolster in spring 2017, he has been heavily involved in several startup companies in the internet and games sector, accelerating the companies’ business along an international growth path. Gustav Boije af Gennäs has extensive experience in the fields of pharmaceutical, organic chemistry, biochemistry and bioanalytics. Gustav has a PhD in pharmaceutical chemistry (University of Helsinki) and a MSc in organic chemistry (University of York & University of Helsinki). He also possesses strong cross-disciplinary expertise in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and inorganic chemistry. He has an exceptionally distinguished career of 16 years at the Technical Research Centre of Finland VTT, the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), the Department of Chemistry at the University of Helsinki, and as a postdoctoral researcher in projects with the Academy of Finland. Before joining the IP sector and Kolster in November 2017, Gustav worked as the team leader and principal researcher of the Drug Discovery unit in the Division of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology at the University of Helsinki. One of the most significant projects of his career as a researcher was the postdoctoral research project with highly competed funding from the Academy of Finland, in which Gustav developed promising new organic compounds for cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. In a second significant key project with the Academy of Finland, Gustav and his team took part in developing new bioanalytics technologies. During his career, Gustav has also researched compounds for Parkinson’s disease and developed stem cell inducing compounds for use in, for example, the treatment of stroke and myocardial infarction. In 2016, Gustav received the Young Researcher Award from both the University of Helsinki and the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters. After these recognitions, he was instrumental in the launch of a research project to develop novel methods to inhibit protozoan parasites (causes of e.g. malaria and leishmaniasis). Gustav has been involved in two patents as an inventor as well as in over 20 scientific publications, and has taught over 15 university courses and supervised several doctoral students.

Jan Henriksson has worked with Kolster since 1997. Timo Joutsenoja has the main task at Kolster of selling IPR services and developing customer accounts. Before joining Kolster in February 2019, Timo worked for VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd, dealing with IPR portfolio management and commercialisation. He is well acquainted with matters concerning the management of intellectual property. His former job with UPM’s Corporate Venturing, and research duties with the Tampere University of Technology, provide a perspective to very different operating environments. “The needs of companies are diverse, and a client of Kolster may be a start-up company as well as a technology giant. During his long career as a patent attorney, Christoffer has successfully protected a wide range of innovations in the many areas of application in the pharmaceutical, food, chemical, paper, construction and cleantech industries. He can be described as a chemist who is equally familiar with organic and inorganic chemistry, but also technical equipment, systems and mechanical inventions. Sustainability, cleantech and the circular economy are areas of technology that are particularly close to him, and require a high level of expertise in the chemical sector. In addition to the drafting of patent applications, Christoffer has extensive experience in various expert opinions, such as freedom to operate, patent infringement, scope of protection analysis as well as opposition and appeal proceedings. He has also assisted litigators in patent disputes in the District Court and the Court of Appeal as a patent attorney. Antti Maaranen has experience in the IP sector since 2001. His core specialities include the protection of solutions related to electrical device assemblies and electrical networks. In addition to patents related to converters, electric machines and the physical composition of electrical installation equipment, Antti has protected solutions related to electrical device assemblies and the management and monitoring of electrical networks, as well as inventions related to the cooling and moisture management of electrical device assemblies. He also has experience in innovations in electricity production, from solar and wind power to traditional condensing and back-pressure power plants. What is common for many protected inventions in electrical engineering is the improvement of energy efficiency. Minna Mikkola works in the chemistry unit, managing patent processing issues with a focus on the official action and acceptance phases. Simon Mügge has a strong patent expertise from the German IPR field as well as extensive specialized expertise in protecting innovations related to life sciences and chemistry innovations since 2007. Simon has extensive experience in drafting and prosecuting applications before the European Patent Office (EPO) and the German Patent and Trademark Office. In addition, he has special knowledge and experience in post-grant opposition and appeal proceedings. He has successfully represented his clients in both defensive and offensive roles in these challenging patent disputes and IP infringement cases between competing companies. Through his patent attorney career, Simon has broadly protected innovations in many applications in the life sciences and organic and inorganic chemistry. His patent clients include a wide range of start-ups and SMEs, as well as global corporations, universities and research institutes. He is well aware of the different IPR needs and strategies of the scientific world and companies of all sizes. The chemical, pharmaceutical, bio fuel, food and animal feed, detergent and cosmetics industries are examples of familiar client industries. Viveka Smeds has performed various patent-related IP assistant duties since 1989. Hans Stellberg has worked as a patent attorney in several IP companies since 1988. Johanna Stenlund joined the trademark sector in 2013. A patent agent with the chemistry team, Anu Taivainen has diverse experience in the IP sector and is specialised in biotechnology, medicine and food industry applications. Anu has worked with Kolster as a patent agent since 2003 and managed varied tasks related to patent protection for chemistry industry products. As a special area, she is also responsible for supplementary protection certificate applications for pharmaceuticals and plant protection products. Anu prepares patent applications and manages their processing for both domestic and foreign clients in several areas of applications, including biotechnology, enzyme chemistry, food industry, diagnostics, medical applications, microbiology, hydrometallurgy and the bioenergy sector. Julia Urbanec is highly proficient in technology especially when it comes to materials science and processing, metals forming, and steels manufacturing technology. Before entering the patent sector and Kolster in January 2019, Julia worked as a researcher and PhD student at Aalto University. In her research and further studies, she familiarised herself with metallurgy, process modelling, and, in particular, mechanical properties, heat treatment, and testing of low-alloyed steels. Part of her materials science and engineering studies she has completed in the USA, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Julia also has work experience in product development in the steel industry, where one of her major projects was getting to know the patents relating to wear-resistant steel from the point of view of competitor monitoring and focusing the product development of the company. Julia was born in China and is thus well versed in Chinese. She came to Finland with her family at the early age of six. If need be, she can also act as an interpreter for Finnish or Chinese companies that wish to protect their inventions in China or Europe and to start new business operations. At Kolster, Julia focuses on the protection of inventions both by our domestic and foreign clients in the various application areas of mechanics, in particular.

Nina Virolainen joined Kolster in early 2017 as a patent agent specialising in chemistry and biotechnology. She became familiar with IP protection due to being involved in several patents as the inventor during her research career, and was so intrigued by the field that she moved to working with patenting full-time. Prior to her career as a patent agent, Nina has had years of experience in R&D in the development and implementation of innovative solutions and processes in biotechnology and environmental technology and in project management, both as a university researcher and in a startup. Her core area of expertise is the protection of processes and solutions in the fields bioenergy, cleantech and the biotechnological applications of microbes.

Tina Winqvist has had a long career in the IP sector since 1987. Zhangping Wu works as Business Development Manager and IP specialist at Kolster China Desk™. She helps our Finnish clients in the Chinese market, where the language, culture and conventions present an additional challenge to managing IP issues efficiently. Zhangping can communicate directly with Chinese partners and make matters proceed more quickly and smoothly. She has helped our European corporate customers, particularly in areas such as the localisation of trademark and domain names on the Chinese markets, and has performed a range of IP analyses of Chinese-language trademark registers and other sources of information. On the other hand, she has also helped our Chinese corporate customers with brand localisation in Europe. When necessary, she can also serve as an interpreter. Her working languages are basically Chinese and English, but she also speaks Finnish. Zhangping has work experience from Beijing-based companies in technology industries. In Finland Zhangping has been working with sales and promotion of international brands for several years. At Kolster since 2015, Zhangping has augmented her brand skills to include IP matters. Zhangping further develops Kolster’s marketing and visibility in China, and keeps on enhancing and strengthening our already well-established China connections under the Kolster brand.
