Erika Niemelä M.Sc. (Tech.) is a medical technology expert with a strongly interdisciplinary background. Her degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Oulu included studies in electrical engineering and information technology, physics, medicine, computer science, bioinformatics, and biology. Erika has also studied process engineering, mathematics, and chemical engineering at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

Erika's particular areas of expertise include software development, signal processing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence methods. Prior to beginning her patenting career at Kolster in October 2020, Erika worked as a software engineer and machine learning systems developer in the product development team of a medical technology and software company. During this time, the start-up developed, patented, and launched to the global market a medical device software library. This technology can be used in EEG and patient monitor devices to interpret the electroencephalogram of intensive care patients and enhance treatment. Erika was also involved as an inventor in one of the further development innovations related to signal processing. In addition, she has experience in software testing for tablet computers and other electrical engineering tasks relating to electronics, and RFID devices.

Erika is fascinated by the idea of ​​being involved in protecting and thus enabling innovations that improve the world and people's lives, in particular, to enter the global market.
