Written by Kolster | 30.10.2020

Kolster’s Helsinki Patent Unit was reinforced as Patent Agent Lassi Saarela joined our mechanical engineering patent team on 19 October 2020. He brings with him the latest knowledge in the field of mechanical engineering and manufacturing technologies, as well as insight into the production processes of industrial companies.

Lassi Saarela graduated this autumn with a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Aalto University. His studies focused on machine design and manufacturing technologies, from conventional methods to the latest production technologies. New technologies such as 3D printing and laser cutting are Lassi’s areas of expertise and special interest. He also has a basic knowledge of programming, CAD design and the utilisation of 5G networks and the industrial internet (IoT) in the manufacturing industry.

Besides technical expertise, Lassi has studies in production economics and, through it, the ability and interest to evaluate patenting as part of a bigger picture, from a business perspective.

"I have a broad interest in new technologies and the evolving world – including how patents can be used to make a profit. I want to take an active role in this development in collaboration with clients,” says Lassi.

In addition to his studies, Lassi has work experience in the industry since 2012. He has worked in various positions in production, plant engineering maintenance and, for the last four years, in production planning at Tikkurila, the leading paint company in the Nordics. In his recent master’s thesis, he investigated how tightened regulations set to be imposed by the EU next year on the processing of carcinogenic titanium dioxide, used as a white pigment by the paint, paper and plastic industries, must be taken into account in production processes at the paint factory.

Lassi has been following the patent industry closely for over two decades as he is related to a seasoned veteran in the industry, European Patent Attorney Marjut Honkasalo.

Lassi also has a special skill rare among Finns. In addition to English, the standard working language for patent attorneys, he speaks fluent Polish.

“I lived in Poland in my childhood and have been back to the country as an exchange student. I am familiar with the culture of Central Europe and also speak German. I also speak a little of my girlfriend’s second home language, Bulgarian.”
