Julia Urbanec

"In addition to protecting the invention itself, one must consider competitors’ IP rights and also recognize when trade secrets offer the best path forward."

Julia Urbanec supports Kolster’s clients in protecting inventions, particularly across a wide range of mechanical engineering applications. She also provides expert guidance in assessing patentability and conducting freedom-to-operate analyses.

Julia has strong technical expertise, especially in materials science, materials processing, metal forming, and mechanical engineering. She has worked as a researcher and doctoral candidate at Aalto University, focusing on metallurgy, process modeling, and particularly the mechanical properties of wear-resistant steels. She has also pursued studies at the University of Illinois (UIUC) in the United States.

Her previous work experience includes product development in the steel industry, where she gained in-depth knowledge of wear-resistant steel patents and the use of patent information in IPR operations and R&D.

Julia is proficient in Chinese and can serve as an interpreter or expert in Finnish-Chinese collaborations—particularly when inventions are being protected or commercialized in China and Europe.

Julia believes that successful invention protection requires not only technical know-how but also a broader understanding of IPR strategy and the competitive landscape.
