European Patent Attorney Kati Leinonen (MSc, Electronics and Computer Science) joined Kolster's ICT patent team on 3 September 2018.

Kati is an experienced patent professional who has been working on invention evaluation, patenting and licensing for ten years. Kati joined Kolster as a patent attorney after serving as a Senior IP Specialist with Nokia’s Patent Unit, where she specialised in managing the company's patent portfolio, supporting and growing the patent licensing business, and the quality control of new patent applications. She spent the early years of her career in the product development of mobile phone operating systems. Since 2008, she has worked in various IP roles, as both a patent engineer and IP specialist. In addition, she has experience of working as a patent engineer for the gaming company, Rovio.

“Over the years, I have developed a good understanding of what kind of patent is commercially valuable. Discussions with licensing and litigation attorneys have also provided me with a valuable perspective on the drafting of patent applications and assessing what kinds of patents provide a good basis for pursuing a licensing business,” Kati explains.

Familiar technological areas include software engineering, embedded systems, mobile solutions, user interfaces, terminal equipment, online games, virtual and augmented reality, IoT and cloud-based solutions, as well as medical data processing and the related equipment. She has broad-ranging expertise in patenting, from identifying inventions and managing the patenting process to the defence and licensing of patents.

“In my new role with Kolster, I will become broadly acquainted with new industries and protect inventions in areas such as software for improving the user experience, or using IoT as part of new product and service concepts.”
